I am so glad to be part of Ada Lovelace Day, an internet movement to recognize women in technology. I am particularly fond of Mae Jemison’s definition of technology:
“People always think of technology as something having silicon in it. But a pencil is technology. Any language is technology. Technology is a tool we use to accomplish a particular task and when one talks about appropriate technology in developing countries, appropriate may mean anything from fire to solar electricity.”
Learn more about Mae Jemison’s unending awesomeness over at Wikipedia. Seriously, do, everything about this woman is stellar. She’s an astronaut, an activist, a Trekkie, she was in the Peace Corps, she said this sentence once:
“Many people do not see a connection between science and dance, but I consider them both to be expressions of the boundless creativity that people have to share with one another.”
I can’t tell you how giddy I was to read up on her.
If the stars align, I will have something else to share with you before ALD 2010 ends… Stay tuned over at twitter.
Thank you for this. I read the wikipedia article, and you’re right, she is awesome!
